Yao wows with perfect game vs. Miami Heat

Yao Ming scored 26 points and set a Houston record by going 12 for 12 from the field to lead the Rockets past the Heat.

Not even Jermaine O'Neal could have helped the Heat disrupt Yao Ming's perfect night.

The Heat didn't have to deal with Tracy McGrady or Ron Artest on Saturday. But it was another set of problems that doomed Miami: Yao Ming and Houston's defense.

That combination forced the Heat into one of its worst offensive outings of the season in a 93-86 loss to the Rockets at the Toyota Center.

Yao set career- and team-best shooting-percentage records by making all 12 of his field-goal attempts, finishing with 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets (25-16).

Yao has become the focal point of the Rockets' offense, with McGrady (knee) and Artest (ankle) both expected to miss close to two weeks to recover from injuries. The Rockets shot 57 percent from the field to end the Heat's streak at 35 consecutive games of holding an opponent to less than 50 percent.

''We tried everything against him,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Yao, who is the league's tallest player at 7-6. ``Obviously, we didn't impact him well. He's so big, he can just see over the top.''

Dwyane Wade had 29 points and nine assists to lead the Heat (21-18), which fell to 3-3 on a seven-game trip that ends Sunday in Oklahoma City.

Shawn Marion had his third consecutive double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Beasley scored 13 off the bench.

But the Heat had no answer from the start for Yao and the Rockets' commitment to pounding the ball inside the lane. Houston set the tone by scored 22 of its first 25 points in the paint.

Yao had point-blank looks even when Miami opted to guard him with 6-11 Jamaal Magloire after first trying 6-9 Joel Anthony.

Yao feasted on the mismatch with a combination of hooks, layups and dunks. He ended the night with a baseline jumper for good measure.

''Besides Jamaal Magloire, they don't have any guys taller than 6-9,'' Yao said. ``I was able to get the ball in the post, and I had energy. This doesn't happen every night.''

It was only the second time in Heat history that an opposing player was perfect from the field against Miami after attempting at least 11 shots.

''I was a step slow because I was afraid of taking a body off him,'' said Magloire, who was unaware Yao was perfect from the field until he was told after the game. ``He was? Wow. That's incredible.''

The Heat had to push through significant challenges off the court before it faced the monumental task waiting on the court in Yao.

A combination of issues engulfed the team in the days leading to Saturday's game. Daequan Cook, the team's top three-point shooter, didn't practice Friday because lingering soreness from a bruised left knee.

Marion has been mentioned prominently in potential trades -- including one that could send him to Toronto in exchange for center Jermaine O'Neal -- and said the speculation has been a distraction.

Wade celebrated his 27th birthday Saturday amid nasty accusations alleged by his estranged wife in their pending divorce proceedings.

Still, the Heat managed to set aside those issues to hang in with the Rockets throughout the game. But Miami shot only 40 percent from the field.

''When it's time to focus and really buckle down, they're really good about it,'' Spoelstra said. ``That's important for a young team, not to get down.

``All of the other things that happen off the court, that fits into that as well.''
